I found JR in the English census for 1871..

...so it is clear he was living here in old age. Actually the family seem to have been tied to Stockport (nr. Manchester, England) for 3 generations, so I think this may be a rabbit-hole for you.
I would gladly look up for you, but on-line English census records only back to 1871. Sounds like your JR emigrated before that.
