Hi Catherine and Pat,

Thank you both for your replies. We have learned a bit more about Joshua Roylance since I posted. Not much about what happened to *him*, so that's still a mystery, but quite a bit about his family.

FIrst of all, I find I am related to him through his sister Sarah, who turns out to be my many-greats grandmother. She married William Davenport.

Next, I found his name on a ship's passenger list! He traveled on the "Irene" which left from Liverpool and arrived in NY in July 1852, with 700 aboard -- he mentions the 700 in his letter, too, so that's nice confirmation! He was 30 when he arrived and his profession was listed as "teacher."

I believe from Joshua's letter that he was the first from his family to emigrate to the US. And I don't think he would have had any children himself while he was here, becauseit turns out he had a wife back home in England -- though from his letter I gather they were estranged. So I suspect he would not have been part of the 3 known Roylance families in the US. But I do NOT know really what happened to him -- no records so far of his death either in the US or in England.

Also, I now have his marriage certificate! He is Joshua Roylance, son of Joshua Vernon Roylance. He married in 1839 (was only 17 or 18) and at the time he was a "Bachelor Shop Keeper" of Knutsford. He married Jane Higginson, a "Spinster of Mobberley". Since he was so young, it's possible he'd been living at home until marriage, so the family may be from Knutsford.

And Joshua's dad, this Joshua Vernon Roylance, is I suspect this guy who is on the IGI:
JOSHUA VERNON ROYLANCE, Christening: 21 NOV 1790        Wilmslow, Cheshire, England
       Father:        SAMUEL ROYLANCE
       Mother:        NANCY

So...anyone with Knutsford or Wilmslow Roylance relatives out there?

-- Clare
