The Ruan Family of St. Croix and Philadelphia

and Apalachicola Florida.

I am gathering information regarding the ruan family of st. croix during the 1700s. i am in contact with a researcher who is reading thru the danish records concerning the virgin islands for the 18th century. we have john ruan signing a document pledging loyalty to the danish crown 1736-7. which may mean he was there as a planter before the danish took over just before the document was signed by all of st. croix(santa cruz, west indies)
i believe from research of the books that the line descends next to a william ruan and then a john ruan and finally to our 2 ruan brothers, john and james.
they were sent to trenton 1782 i think, have record from some research some where.
they attended trenton academy.
john attended early princeton. he became a doctor. he was during the better part of his career the biggest obstetrician in Philadelphia. i have census, tax, directory, chancery, will books, family documents. he married elizabeth gibbs, dau of richard and margery (harrison) gibbs of bucks county. second marriage to rachel mcilvaine and third marriage to susan rodman. these families were closely related and intermarried often during this time. the doctor's 1st and only son to have children was John Gibbs Ruan, b. 1798. he worked with his first cousins, William Gibbs Porter and Richard Gibbs Porter in the commercial house of Wm. G. Porter and co. John ran the warehouses in Apalachicola florida while wlm. operated the co. from Phily. They were cotton and corn merchants. i have the ruan tax record to 1869 in apalachicola, franklin co., florida.
we have many pieces of the puzzle and as more come to light it becomes apparent how much more we may find. i know of a photo of John Gibbs Ruan and his younger half brother, William Rodman Ruan that can be found online at the Florida Archives photo collection. I am searching for portraits of Dr. John Ruan and any of his wives and children. they must be out there somewhere. i know of the doctor's mansion in frankfort and we know of james' marriage in st. croix to elizabeth(?)
if anyone else is searching this family please email me at jnlnjack@aol.com

kind regards,
jason carpenter
