I have already requested the contact information for Mr. Fredericks, the gentleman accumulating information for the forthcoming book on the Ruan family history. Mr. Fredericks is probably the best person to speak with on the subject since he is kind of a repository for all information from our line. By the way, it is intersting that you mentioned one of the Ruans having married a rear admirial of the Navy. I distinctly remember having heard this story on numerous occasions. I also understand that it was this admiral in the navy who suggested our line move to Iowa where the soil would be fertile enough resume the occupation of planting/farming, though I suppose this doesn't make too much sense because my great grandfather, and believe his father as well, were doctors. As I mentioned before, however, my knowledge is sketchy at best so I think it's best to connect you with Mr. Fredericks. I have informed my grandfather, John Ruan, of our connection and is interested in learning more. I expect to hear back from both my grandfather and Mr. Fredericks shortly and will coordinate an initial conference call to see how we should proceed.

To some of the points in your post I wanted to confirm that my grandfather has been to hannah's rest and has pictures of the old homestead. However, I think these pictures are from the 1970s and lack the high quality resolution that you find as commonplace today. Through the years he has been in close communication with a woman by the name of Patty Tidwell. I believe she lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is a cousin but I am not particularly sure how it is that we are related. Anyway, I believe she has a wealth of information and has been very helpful in gathering information for the book. I thought I would mention her name in case you have come across it in your research. Also, my grandfather has been to the philly house at least once and has on occassion provided funds for rehabilitation purposes. That said, I really look forward to discussing this with you further and learning more about out family heritage. It's funny that you mention John Ruan swearing allegiance to the Danish crown but that you believe he was of English decent. We have long debated what our heritage is because we have yet to find any documentation or information that would indicate a country from which the clan originated prior to the 18th century. There are some theories that we were French heugonots, other theories suggest we are English (there actually is a town called Ruan --- in Wales I believe), then I suppose you could believe that we are Danish-- though to your point, given the title of Planter, this is probably less likely. ANyway, it's a fascinating subject.

On a more personal note, it sounds like you are living in NYC, is this true? I am in Chicago, about five years now. I moved up here after graduating from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN (undergrad). I am joined here in CHicago by two of my cousins, John Ruan IV and Rachel Ruan. I also have two other cousins in prepatory school a couple hours away at Culver Academy. There names are Adam and Phillip Ruan. My name, btw, is Stephen Fletcher (26 y/o). I have a brother Jonathan Ruan Fletcher, who lives in Boston. Most of the rest of my immediate family continues to reside in Des Moines, Iowa. In terms of other family members of which I am somewhat aware I know of Patty Tidwell down in New Mexico, John Lee Ruan (my grandfather's nephew) in California and there are some people out in Oregon, however, I don't know their names.

I presume that your mother is a Ruan, where does she live? Anyway, as soon as I get contact information I will get back to you.

Stephen
