Dear Jill Woolaston,
My interests have led me to believe that the version of events which led to the setting up of a Ruby clan in Ireland, is that we originated in France from the town of Roubaix near Lille N. France, probably around 1200 or earlier, and again is likely that there was a trickle of people into Switzerland at that time, who set up a local community, who then quickly absorbed the Huguenot expatriates. From Switzerland the Calvinists with their new freedom would have spread over the world with the Gospel in each man's language. My clan went to Ireland, some direct by sea to the Southern Ireland ports, others through London, some directly from French ports, establishing colonies on the South Coast of England, Bermondsey E. London(through the Port of London), the Port of Southampton, in Devon & Cornwall, from London north to Liverpool, colonies in Manchester and Chester, across the Irish sea to Dublin, where they established another Colony, and some South again to Waterford.
The earliest Ruby I have found yet ( in Devon) is about 1535; the Earliest in London about 1600; there is one recorded in Wiltshire about 1608. Ruby arrivals started earlier still in Ireland. The movement of the whole Ruby Dynasty I find very interesting. The difficulty of tracing The Irish Rubys is that the National Record Officewas burnt to the ground and all records destroyed in 1922, and the records of the French Church in Cork City were destroyed by flood.
Clear as Mud? I'm still trying to put it in order.
Please let me know
