From Information passed down to me by MANY Rudd Researchers...
"There are four primary Rudd families in America:
The earliest lineage is Lieutenant Jonathan Rudd (1620?-1658). He was one of the first settlers of Saybrook Colony, in what is now Connecticut. Jonathan Rudd came to America before 1640.
The next line is Captain John Rudd, who entered James City County, Virginia on December 18, 1663. Years later, John becomes Captain of the Hopewell, a 300 ton sailing ship that carried tobacco to England and returned with staple goods for the settlers. The Hopewell was berthed primarily at the place now known as Hopewell, Virginia on the James River.Captain John Rudd was active in Charles City and Henrico Counties, as well as the Hopewell area.He received several Land Grants in these areas (Keep in mind that Chesterfield County did not split off from Henrico County until the mid 1700’s).He also worked with William Byrd in establishing freight rates for Virginia goods and is mentioned in William Byrd’s diary. It is known that he and his unknown wife had at least one son, John Rudd Senior, who married Avis Whittaker. The third line is descended from Burlingham Rudd who came to America as an indentured servant in 1728. Burlingham was one of the many Norfolk County horsethiefs, probably convicted unjustly on the testimony of unscrupulous clergy and noblemen to satisfy the quota for settlers for the Carolinas. Burlingham's sons were anti-royalty and participated in the Regulators Movement of North Carolina, an early prelude to the War of the Revolution.
The final major Rudd family is an Irish Rudd family who came to America in 1760.
Jonathan Rudd is the most researched Rudd family, the Irish Rudd family is second, Captain John Rudd is third, and Burlingham Rudd is last. "
My Line (Captain John Rudd) Originated in Virginia, but over the last 300 years have moved to Florida and Texas and California and Ohio and Arkansas, etc.i can only assume the other lines have moved around as well. So you can't automatically link a Rudd to a specific line simply on where they are living now.
