Rudolph or Rudolphi

Does anyone know if the name Rudolph and Rudolphi (the i pronounced as a long e) have the same roots? We had heard the Rudolph's without the I were Lutheran and the Rudolphi's with the I were Catholic and the split came around the time of Martin Luther. Has anyone else heard this reasoning?
