History of the Runner name

Billie,
I believe a good argument can be made for Runner being an "Englishized" version of Renner, in some instances. Besides the meaning of Renner (runner or messenger), the lower-case German "e" in the script of the 1700s can look like an English "u."
For many reasons, all circumstantial at this time, I am of the opinion that the Runner family who settled in Warren County, KY, and the Renners of Rockcastle County, KY, are from Adam Renner/Runner of Mongomery/Wythe County, VA.
One of the reasons I began looking at Adam Runner as a possibly ancestor was that he was listed in various VA records as both Runner and Renner and the same goes for his sons, Adam and Jacob, after moving to KY. Adam Jr (whose descendants go by Runner) was listed clearly as Renner in the 1810 census; Jacob (whose descendants go by Renner) is clearly called Runner in various documents around that time.
I'm not saying all Runners were Renners, but I think some may have been.
Jeff
