Where you look depends on how this family was lost. If they became victims of the Nazis there may be surviving records of them in Germany. If they were displaced or died in the fighting there may be no records of the occurance.
The principle archive in Europe that deals with those people displaced to Western Germany and those who were lost in the death camps is at Bad Arolsen in Germany.
Bad Arolsen is a professional organization with their own rules. You would need to find their web site to learn their requirements.
