Even if he came as an adult there should be some documentation. How do you know that he died in abt. 1943?
If he was Jewish, did you check www.jewishgen.org Was English already their common language?
What about the childrens records? Were they baptized Catholic?
BAWKIN could sound like BALKIN or BELKIN.
