I recently purchased the subject undated photo depicting nine young men and an older man standing in front of a train shed. It is identified across the bottom of the mount in blue ballpoint ink (Virgil is fourth from the left, marked with an "x" placed between his feet and another "x" placed next to his head):

"Myrtle Creek section and Virgil Rust's first job. He
was 15 yrs old. He died while working on same section
36 yrs 6 mo and 4 days latter [sic]."

This individual appears in several public member trees posted on He is listed in the 1900 Census data for Cow Creek Precinct, Douglas Co., OR; the 1910 Census data for Myrtle Creek Precinct, Douglas Co., OR; the 1920 Census data for Civil Bend Precinct, Myrtle Creek, Douglas Co., OR; and the 1930 Census data for Civil Bend/Electron? Precinct (resided on Pacific Highway), Douglas Co., OR. His WWI draft registration card is also available.

Virgil Nelson Rust, born 12 Oct 1891 in Philomath, Benton Co., OR, died 22 Oct 1939 in Douglas Co., OR, was the son of John Nelson Rust, born 22 Feb 1855 in Quincy, Adams Co., IL, died 14 Jun 1920 in Dillard, Douglas Co., OR; and Elizabeth Collett Williams, born 22 Aug 1867 in Polk Co., OR, died 2 Feb 1927 in Talent, Jackson Co., OR. Virgil was employed as a section hand and later as a section foreman for the railroad. He married Mamie Rose Martin, born 29 Aug 1898?, died 24 Jan 1987 in Myrtle Creek, Douglas Co., OR. Virgil and Mamie had at least five children (all born in OR), including Eunice L. Rust, born about 1920 (she was adopted); Virgil Nelson Rust, Jr., born 14 Jan 1925 in Dillard, Douglas Co., OR, died 26 Jan 2006 in Myrtle Creek, Douglas Co., OR (obit available online); Carlene Rust; and Carolyn Rust.
