The Parents of Jabe RYALS
Please excuse my previous postings which were incorrectly titled.
Several people have listed the Parents of Jabe Ryals as, “probably, Jordan Ryals and Elizabeth Howell”.In the absence of proof, I have analyzed the census records of McIntosh County, Georgia, and concluded that the censuses do not support this position. The census records do support the conclusion that the parents of Jabe Ryals are John Ryals and Mary Davis. My analysis follows. If you find errors in my logic or, better yet, if you have proof which refutes or supports my analysis, please, oh please, let me know.
First, the case that Jordan is not the father of Jabe.
On the 1850 census, Jabe is listed as 23 which puts his birth in 1827.He lived in the 271 Militia District. The 1860 census has his age as 33 living in 271 District. The 1870 census has his age as 45 (two years is close enough for government work) and he lived in the 24th Militia District. The 1900 census has his birth as unknown month of 1828 and he was in the 1514 Militia District.I have his death as 1904.
So using 1827/8 as his birth year, he was 3/4 in 1830; 13/14 in 1840; 23/24 in 1850.
On the 1830 census when Jabe was 3 or 4, Jordan, in 24 Distrist, had no sons in the under five column. On the 1840 census when Jabe was 13 or 14, Jordan had no sons in the 10-15 column. The census does not support the contention that Jabe was a son of Jordan.
Now, the case for John Ryals and Mary Davis as Jabe’s parents.John and Mary were married on 6 August 1804.Reference: Wilson, Caroline Price, Annals of Georgia, Important Early Records of the State, Volume I, Liberty County Records and A State Revolutionary Pay Roll, Georgia Genealogical Reprints, % The Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., Episcopal Church of The Annunciation, 405 Virginia Way, Vidalia, Georgia, reprinted 1969.
On the 1830 census, when Jabe was 3 or 4, John, in 24 Distrist, John had one son in the under 5 column. On the 1840 census when Jabe was 13 or 14, John is not listed, but Mary Ryals has one son in the 10-15 column and lived in the 271 Militia District.
On the 1850 census, Jordan was in the 24th District. On the same census, Mary Ryals was in the 271st District in dwelling 158 with Vicey, Isaac and Benjamin. Her next door neighbor was Jabe in dwelling 157.
In 1860, Jabe was in the 271 Militia District in dwelling number 135 with Sarah and four of his children.Mary Ryals was in dwelling 146.Vicy Crane was the head of household which, in addition to Mary, included Benjamin, and Isaac Davis. Next door to them was Margaritt Rowe and her three children. The second of Margaritt’s children was Jabez Leonard Rowe, my great grandfather and son of Jabez Ryals.Yes, I have proof.
Based on the fact that no census shows Jordan with a son of Jabe’s age and the fact that each censes show John/Mary Ryals with a son of Jabe’s age and the proximity of Jabe to Mary, I conclude that it is highly probable that the parents of Jabe Ryalswere John Ryals and Mary Davis Ryals.
Once again,if you find errors in my logic or, better yet, if you have proof which refutes or supports my analysis, please, oh please, let me know.
