Saavedra Family Genealogy Forum

I am a first generation Cuban American/ Gallego. I followed my roots to a place calle Porino, Cannes, Pontevedra , Espana. I saw there my family cementary. The Saavedra family has been in Cannes for hundreds of years. They are still there although many have gone to live in South America,Cuba and who knows? The nature of the Gallego people is to Roam. I refer to the men. My grandfather left Galicia in 1913 during a period of war. You can track the periods of large migrations from Galicia and other places by looking at extreme economic/ agricultural problems and times of war.The area is still Agriculral. There is also a large sea port Vigo which provided the means of exodus as well as income. My grandfather Manuel Saavedra was a fisherman in Cuba. He came to Cuba at age 15 with his brother Ricardo who was a bit older. There was one brother Jose who died in Spain and a sister Jesusa also deceased in Spain. One brother diappeared in South America I don't know his name but he would be born around 1900. The Saavedra men of my roots All know how to cut Marble. The area is full of marble known as Porino stone. It has become very valuable and has made them well off. The last generation did not know that their treasure was under thier feet. Another sur name in the cementary is Lugo. This name is Geographic from Lugos to the west. By the way if you speak Castellano you wont understand Gallego. It is very different. Well I hope you found this informative. Good luck.
