I have the Saban family tree started in 1457. Yes 1457!
It started from one person branching off in to all known male descendants, up till 1960's. This person was a military man in Montenegro, named Ivan Borojevic. He had sons, one of them named Dragoslav (translates in to "Dear and Famous"). From there on, all Dragoslav's children had a last name Dragoslavic. This is much like Vikings used to make up the last name (Icelanders still do) after fathers first name. Say, Eric's son, becomes Ericson. Add "ic" to Dragoslav and it means "little Dragoslav".
The family carried on with Dragoslavic last name until one of them got it changed in to Saban. In medieval times the area was ruled by invading Turkish Empire. The village was ruled and terrorized by a Turk with a first name Saban. One Dragoslavic person ended up killing this Saban, and throwing his body in to a cave. The body was decomposing and the cave got named "Stinky Cave". It still goes by that name. The villagers were thankful for a relief from the tyrant, and celebrated this Dragoslavic person by calling him by the name of his victom. Later all his children too went by Saban last name. That is how a Turkish first name become a Montenegrian last name.
In early 1900's my grandfather Dusan Saban and his brother, changed their names to original Dragoslavic. However all the other relatives are still Saban, and there are only very few Dragoslavics, just the descendants of my grandfather and grand uncle. I'm sure Saban C. from this forum is a close relative.
There is quite a few Sabans in USA. I've checked the computer data in Ellis Island immigrant museum. Most of them come from Montenegro, Croatia, Serbia, Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, generally the same geographical area.
