Hannah Baker, mother of Samuel Saffell, was the daughter of Martin Baker & Phoebe Snodgrass, who were married 11 Feb 1772 in Botetourt Co., VA.
Martin Baker was born ca. 1741 in VA, s/o Thomas Baker (b. 8 Jan 1711, Chester Co., PA; d. 10 Jan 1777, Culpeper Co., VA) & Dorothy Davenport. Martin d. bef. 7 Dec 1781.
Phoebe Snodgrass was born in Botetourt Co., VA, d/o Joseph Snodgrass & Hannah Vernon. After the death of Martin Baker, she m/2 13 Apr 1788, Montgomery Co., VA, William McKee. A descendant of Phoebe & William McKee is Lela L. McKenzie, 56 Bryan, Pryor, OK 74361. I have not corresponded with her in several years, so I am not sure if this is still a good address.
Joseph Snodgrass & Hannah Vernon were married in Chester Co., PA, and then lived most of their lives in Botetourt Co., VA, on the banks of Tinker's Creek, so to distinguish him from the other Joseph Snodgrasses, he is usually referred to as Joseph of Tinker's Creek.
At the present time, I am tracking down some information that I think will prove who Joseph's father was, but for now there is nothing definite.
Hannah Vernon was Quaker, but was thrown out of the Society of Friends for marrying a non-member. Her parents were Isaac Vernon and his first wife, Sarah Hannah Williams (NOT his second wife, Mary Sellers!). Her parents are unknown, but Isaac was the son of Robert Vernon & Eleanor Minshall.
I have several more generations on that line, but I am traveling and don't have them with me. If you email me, I can send them to you when I get home (probably in a week or so).
