there is a book in the library of congress on the saffell family. It is most interesting and seems that many of the ancestors came from warren co , front royal, va. the names in the book show several spellings. saffelle, chappell, sappell, safel. Many of the people could not spell. Officials spelled the names the best they could by what they thought it sounded like. Hope this helps. According to records in the Shenandoah Valley the Saffells came there from Maryland shortly after serving the seven years near frederick, maryland.
