ISABELLA DICK SAFFELL (1844-1925), TN>Watsonville, CA

The daughter of Learner Blackman Saffell (1810-1874) and Sarah Alexander Wallace (1815-1884), of Blount Co., TN, Isabella Dick Saffell (1844-1925), was m. to the Rev. Rufus Kendrick Scruggs (c1837-c1868) in TN after 1860, had 2 chldren with him, and moved with husband, children, and parents to Watsonville, CA, in c1867, reportedly by way of the Cape Horn sea route around the tip of South America. The Rev. Scruggs d. shortly thereafter and Isabella m. widower Abram Wiley Rodgers (1823-1883), who had also moved from TN. With Rodgers, who already had 2 children from his earlier marriage to Isabella's aunt, Mary Ellen Wallace, Isabella had another 5 children in CA, among them Viola Rodgers, who was to become a noted journalist. Shipper A. W. Rodgers d. in 1883 while on a business trip to Mazatlán, Mexico, and Isabella was left alone to raise her large family of children. She moved to San Francisco, where she worked as a teacher at the Irving Institute. According to one source, she m. a third time, to a Francis Hull, of Jackson, MS.

Rogers” and a “Mrs. L.E. Saffell and child” among the CA-bound passengers of the S.S. Henry Chauncey, which sailed from NY the day before)
