Dear Jim There were a lot of Joseph Saffords. I believe that we could be related, but you would need to find out a little more information first. The Safford line also has quite a bit of supposition in it, especially back in the 1700's. My Saffords, as far as I can trace, go back to Ipswich, Mass. where I believe (and have information to support it) that there were two John Saffords, probably relations. One married Hannah Newman, the other married Abigail Martin. They both moved to Connecticut, one to Norwich, the other to Preston, where they both died, one in 1736, the other in 1739, in different cemeteries. I am of the Abigail Martin line. Abigail and John had 5 children, one of which was Joseph. Joseph and wife Ann Longbottom moved to Bennington, Vermont, where they were some of the first founders of the town there, in about 1761. Joseph had children, among them another Joseph who married Mercy Robinson. This is the possible connection I have. Joseph died in Malone New York in 1807. The town, under a different name, had been est. about 2 years earlier. His wife died several years later in Bennington. I'm not sure if they moved to Malone or he was thinking of doing so. I have been thinking that they did move out of Bennington as there is very little information on him or son Joseph. I am now trying to pursue a Nichols line that lived in Lewis, New York. They are allied families with the Saffords and Woods. Evidently some Nichols and Saffords and Woods DID move up to Malone. This is where I'm stuck. However, it appears that you do have a connection with the state of New York. Find out more about your grandfather, where he was born, where his father was born, and I do believe there will be a connection. Also, check out the Sarah Robinson genealogy. It's on the Gen Forum site under both Robinson and Safford. There is quite a bit of information on the Saffords, as well as the Nichols. The Saffords later moved to Michigan, in the Detroit area, before moving to California. Hope to of been of some help to you. Nancy Lee
