Dear Joy I, too, am looking for more information on Saffords from the Detroit area. It could be that your Claude is a relative of my Josephs. I am in contact with someone from the Detroit area who will be doing a little research for me. Perhaps you could write for a death certificate for said Claude. It should provide information as to his father and mother, as well as where he was born, etc. I am looking for two Joseph Saffords who moved to the Detroit area in the 1830's. Unfortunately for me death birth, marriage and death records weren't really kept until after the 1860's. My Josephs died in 1857 and 1861. The marriage I was interested in was in 1866, one year before records were kept. In your case you have an excellent chance of finding out more information. I have also found that the census is very satisfactory. Are you in an area to visit a library or the National Archives? I can't guarantee it, but I am trying to go back to the Sutro Library soon to do more census look-ups. Give me what you have on Claude and I'll see what I can do. Do you know how old he was when he died, when he came to Michigan, his occupation, his birth date? Have you looked on the internet on the various census? I know that Ancestry.com, and also Cindy's has census information on Michigan. Nancy Lee mjlee@pacbell.net
