Dear Judith I don't see any direct connection. However, I believe there were two Safford lines, probably connected, one that went through Thomas, who came in in the 1630's and Josiah, who came in the 1670's. I am in the minority on this opinion. Both John Saffords moved to Connecticut, one to Preston, New London County, the other to Norwich, New London County. Both had children named Joseph. There is one reference to a Joseph being born in Ipswich. I think the other Joseph was born elsewhere in Mass. but haven't pursued this as yet. My Joseph moved to Bennington, Vt. Joseph's brother was named John. He stayed in Norwich. It's possible your John was son of John, son of John. I am trying to figure out a New York connection as am trying to track down Joseph's son, Joseph, b 1783 in Bennington. He had son Joseph in 1810 in Bennington. From there I can't find anything more so am assuming he moved for a time to New York. There are Josephs in New York in the 1820's and 1830's. He died in Michigan (supposedly) in 1857. It's also interesting about Abigail Martin. I have an Abigail Martin as marrying John Safford in 1702 in Ipswich, Mass. Maybe another tie would be through her. She was born in 1676 in Andover, Mass. Sorry I couldn't have been of more help. Nancy Lee mjlee@pacbell.net
