I have been researching Saffords for twenty years. My brick wall is trying to prove Joseph Safford who resided in Albion Oswego NY in 1860 was the son of Jonathan Safford who is on the 1790 Argyle Washington NY Census.( I believe this Jonathan was from Preston CT and the son of Jonathan Safford Sr. and Susanna Brooks) My elusive Joseph Safford was married to Sarah Prouty Daughter of Richard Prouty and Sarah Moor of Easton Washington Co NY. However I have never been able to find a marriage record. Joseph Safford and Sarah "Sally" Prouty Safford had one known son Willard Safford b. 1829. They may have had some older daughters who names are not known at this time. Any one with any info please contact me.
In the meantime I have collected a pile of info. It is frustrating to only find bits and pieces all over the net. Libraries, books etc.
I am in agreement with other researchers, such as Nancy Lee that there are two prominent Safford lines here. (among others) Descendants of Thomas Safford of Ipswich. and Descendants of Josiah Safford of Staffordshire.
I also agree that there are tons of errors listed for these families. Like the Abigail Martin Controversy.
I am listing my entire file of both lines for all researchers to view. I know there are errors. If anyone can add, or correct any info please list it on the forum. I am doing this to help us all.

I was just reading over the transcripts of the witchcraft trials in Salem, MA, 1692.
They record a Joseph SAFFORD of Ipswich testifying against Elizabeth How (who was executed for witchcraft soon after). The testimony is dated June 30, 1692, and in the deposition, Joseph's age is given as "about 60".
This would place his date of birth at about 1632, perfect for the Joseph SAFFORD of Ipswich who was the son of Thomas SAFFORD the immigrant.
ps. There is also reference in the transcripts to Abigail MARTIN "about" 16 years old, of Andover. Could this be THE Abigail MARTIN who later married John SAFFORD Jr.???????
