Dear Room: The diary kept by Moses Safford of Kittery, Maine (1833-1914) during his service in the US Navy during the Civil War has been published and is now available. Entitled "Showing the Flag: The Civil War Naval Diary of Moses Safford, USS Constellation" this book is probably THE most detailed first person account of life in the Navy during the Civil War. An attorney by training, the diary is well written. The transcribed document is in the possession of the USS Constellation Museum in Baltimore. Safford served as the Yeoman (Warrant Officer in charge of the ship's supplies) aboard the USS Constellation from March, 1862 to February, 1865. This placed him in the position of knowing the lives, personalities, foibles, etc. of the entire crew, from the captain to the lowest landsman. The book is hardback, 380 pages in length, of which about 300 are the diary itself, while the remaining is footnotes, index, numerous photos (some never before published...including two photos of the diarist). To see what the cover looks like, visit www.historypress.net. For persons interested in the book from this room, if you order through me for the retail price ($35), I will throw in shipping and arrange for both of the editors (of which I am one) to personalize it for you. If you have any questions, I can be contacted at sbockmiller@adelphia.net or at 301-371-6311. Steve Bockmiller Co-editor, "Showing the Flag" Notify Administrator about this message?
