Everett Schermerhorn Stackpole's *Old Kittery, [Maine] and Her Families* has a two-page bio with photo of Moses A. Safford, Esq.

Moses was born 28 Sept. 1833 to Edward Deering Safford and his wife Mary R. Lewis. Moses was the grandson of Rev. Moses Safford, founder and pastor of the First Christian Church in Kittery, York County, Maine.

Moses attended public schools in Kittery and then went to the Institute in New Hampton, NH, after which he "read law with Stillman B. Allen of Kittery and was admitted to the bar in 1861." He served in the U.S. naval service from Nov. 1861 to 1865. He resumed his law practice after the war.

In Kittery he was Registrar of Probate from 1877 to 1885. He also served as selectman, town agent, superintendent of schools, chairman of the Rice Public Library Building Comittee, member of the Naval Lodge, and commander of the Edward G. Parker Post of the Grand Army of the Republic.
