Mary Alice Safford, whose nickname was "Minnie", was born 7 September 1874 in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, and died 5 November 1943 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. She was the daughter of Robert H. Safford and Zerriah/"Sarah" H. Jenkins.

Minnie married Albert Ross Hughes (aka Ross Albert Hughes) on 27 April 1898 at Mora, Kanabec County, Minnesota.
They divorced in Spokane County, Washington, ca 1915. They had one son and four daughters. Albert married (2) Marie Charbonneau and had a son by her.
