Saladin family of St. Louis, MO.
Family tradition holds that the Saladin family was required to choose an Arabic name during the Crusades.
The oldest records of the Saladin surname date from before 1100 AD in Burgundy, France, and Sicily.
The Saladins gradually moved into Switzerland and Alsace-Lorraine.
Jake Saladin was born in St. Louis, MO, in
1841. He married Elizabeth (unknown) of Alsace-Lorraine.
It is said that he grew tired of explaining how to pronounce "Jacques," and changed his name to Jake.
Their son, Henry Saladin, was born in 1871 in St. Louis, MO. He married Elizabeth Bauer, born in 1874, in St. Louis, MO.
Elizabeth Bauer's parents were John Bauer and Clara Earhardt.
Henry Saladin's son Ralph Saladin was born in
1896 in St. Louis, MO. He married Irene Behrns, born in 1901, in St. Louis, MO.
Irene's father was Henry Behrns, born in 1867 in St. Louis,MO. Henry married Anna
Beers, born 1869, in St. Louis, MO.
Henry Behrn's parents were Frederick Behrns, born 1837, of Hamburg, Germany, and Theresa
(unknown) of Hannover, Germany.
Daughter of Ralph Saladin and Irene Behrns was Shirley J. Saladin, born 1931 in St. Louis. She married Richard Winfield, born 1925 in Wichita, KS.
Shirley J. Saladin died in 1988.
