Saladino's Reggio Calabria
Ciao, fellow Saladino's!
I started researching my family's history
in Feb.'97. Since that time, I have mailed
out many letters(and e-mails)and received
few replies. Of those replies, all but one
were from Saladino's of Sicilian heritage.
My grandfather had always told us that we
were Calabrese. I was beginning to doubt
him when I received a phone call from
cousins in Reggio Calabria, the following
June. It turns out that, of the 19
(count 'em) non-sicilian Saladino's,(Italia
n phone books list 250+ Sicilian one's) we
are closely related to each one.
As for my research...A fellow Saladino whose
father emigrated from Camporeale in the pro
vince of Palermo, related to me an "oral
tradition" that is handed down in his family
from father to son..."The name Saladino is
the Italian spelling of the TITLE Salah-ud
-din.(yes,Saladin was not a surname origina
lly)In Arabic it means, honor of the faith,
or goodness to the faith. The family
originated in Anatolia, wich is partly in
the eastern end of what is now turkey.
They were Armenian Kurds and were moslem.
They are believed to have immigrated into
Italy, and Sicily sometime in the latter
part of the 12th century. They split into
three groups, two settling in eastern
Italy, including eastern Sicily. And a
third, in western Sicily". My great-
grandfather arrived in the USA on 3.5.'05.
He was born in the commune Palizzi, in
the province of Reggio Calabria on Dec.25
1884. His name was Natale Saladino.
