El apellido de los Salazar es de origen vasco y significa Solar Viejo, Sala=solar y Zar o Zarra=Viejo. Para los genealogistas, los fundadores de esta casa en las Merindades fueron dos nobles navarros que procedían del Valle de Salazar : Gastón y Galindo de Salazar. Al enfrentarse con el rey navarro huyeron, pasaron a Castilla y levantaron sus palacios en el pueblo de Salazar, cercano a Villarcayo
