The Salazar family is one of the most ancient and distinguished families of old Castille. The ealiest recorded member was one Aigoland de Salazar who defeated the Emperor Charlemagnes Army at The battle of Roncevalles in 798 A.D over 1,200 years ago.The family originates from the Val de Salazar in Navarre. This is why early members of the family were called de Salazar....such as Juan de Salazar i.e meaning John from the place called Salazar. The Valley of the Salazars is a truly beautiful and breathtaking place. They make a very good hard cheese there by the banks of the River Salazar!!! If you get hold of a good map of Spain you can see how easy it would have been for Aigoland to march up the Valley of Salazar and up to the pass at Roncevalles.Roland, who I believe was Charlemagnes nephew , was later made famous by medeavil poets. He was cut down by Salazars men despite blowing his horn for help. The family is so ancient that it is reputed that Saint Lawrence was a member.I believe he was martyred in Rome in the 4th century after Christ. He was roasted alive on a gridiron, and asked his tormentors to turn him over when he was roasted enough on one side.A tenous theory behind The origins of the name is that Saint Lawrence was also known as San Lorenzo or San Lazarre. The n being dropped at a later date to produce the name Sa lazarre which then became Salazar. However there is only one reference to this theory in the history books so I am somewhat skeptical as to its veracity. The history of the family is a vast subject and really the documentated beginnings of the family really begin in the year 982 A.D.
