William Sale, the immigrant
I am starting this new discussion about William Sale the immigrant hopefully to resolve the issue of were he is from in England, etc.
First, to his date of arrival in America. There are numerous references to William arriving on March 13, 1657. However, he actually arrived on March 13, 1658. This is due to the duel dating system of the Julian Calendar in use during this period. The date should have been shown as March 13 1657/58. The new year during this time period was March 25th and dates after that were written just 1658.
My further point is that he did not serve as and indentured servant for seven years as some have alleged, but for more likely six years.
In 2004, I contacted Fareham Parish in Hampshire Engand and had them check their parish records for 1638 for William Sale and variant spellings. The results of that search were that there is no record of William Sale being born or christened in the parish that year.
I have untaken the task with the parish starting this week, January 4th, 2010, to resolve this mater completely by having them recheck their records, but expanding it to the years 1637-1642. I will post those results when I get them.
It is my belief that William was actually born between 1639-1642 and probably elsewhere in England
