Uncle Tom 'Humpy" Salmons was the pastor at Concord Church for many years. The Church stands across from Horse Creek, WV which is just about 1/2 mi south of Tolsia High School at Glenhayes, WV.
Phillip, I believe, was Tom's son.Phil lived directly across the Tug from Webb, WV.His family did their TRADING at my Grandpa Stan Salmons' little country store there at Webb.It was quite a chore for them to row across the Tug, walk to the store, shop, carry the goods back to the little row boat and then row back across the Tug.
Men and women from every hill and hollow around came to those little country stores.I recall in the early 50's a few of the old timers still riding horses and mules as their primary mode of transportation. The county road was so poor that from about late October thru late April one just got the truck down in the ruts left by the previous vehicles and tried to make it without getting stuck.More than a few times we had to help a line of cars get out of the mud in order to clear the road, and they in turn helped us get out of the ruts and mud. Those near Webb will recall the two infamous DRAGG CUTS that traversed the edge of the mountains high above the N & W Railroad -- it was the only way to get up or down the River to Fortgay or Crum in those days.
Tom Humpy was a much loved man.He was often called upon to saddle up an old mule or horse and go meet/pray with the sick or their family in the middle of the night.Pastor David Jarrell of Dunlow, WV told me of going when he was not yet a teenager at midnight to get Uncle Tom to come pray with his family--Tom arrived about 5 a.m. or so, and Dave's family member passed on within an hour or so of Tom's prayer meeting.
Your family and mine run from the same line -- but then all of us seem to run from Roland Jr & his wives, Edna Osborne and Nancy Cox.
