Dear George,
Thank you for replying to my
Saltonstall letter. Thanks for all the information about the family.I find it a very interesting family to be related to. My thinking is that Ann is in that first family, Generation I. This is what I have written about Ann:
She comes from a very important family in England and the Colonies. Her family came to New England on the ARABELLA in 1630. Thewas the flag ship for the Winthrop fleet, and Gov. Winthrop himself was on board.Apparently Sir Richard Saltonstall was very close to the governor and assisted him.
Family members on the ARABELLA were: her father, Sir Richard SALTONSTALL of London, Richard Saltonstall, Jr., Samuel Saltonstall, Robert Saltonstall, Rosamond Saltonstall and Grace Saltonstall, who was probably her mother. It is puzzling that Anne did not come with the rest of the family, being only eight years old at the time. It seemed that maybe she is not really part of that family, but the evidence on the Internet says that she is. Usually the only child listed for her parents is Richard, born in 1610.Anne would have been twelve years younger, perhaps the youngest. She must have stayed back in England with relatives.
"SIR RICHARD SALTONSTALL, who inherited in 1613 the estates acquired by his grandfather, Gilbert (they amounted to over 3,000 acres), was the Founder of this branch of the family in America.
In company with Governor Winthrop he sailed from England in the ARABELLA, to Salem, MA in 1630, and later helped to settle Watertown returning to England the following year where, in due course, he was appointed Ambassador to Holland."
Her mother died in MA about 1635.
Anne has the title of "Lady".Her father is called "Sir" and her great grandfather, Sir Richard Saltonstall (1521-1601) was a Knight and Lord Mayor of London. The family pedigree is huge and goes back through many kings and queens.
One of her ancestors on her mother's side is Eleanor Of Aquitaine, probably the most powerful woman in the world in her time, (12th-century Europe). She was married to two kings, one in France. Louis VII; and one in England, King Henry II.In addition she was the mother of King John and Richard the Lion Hearted. She had much to do with politics, and even went on a crusade.
Anne married Stephen Rich about 1639 and they had Richard the following year.At some point in time they were all immigrants to New England.
