My maiden name is Salsman.I grew up in northern California (Rockville). There are still many Salsman's in the area of Fairfield, Vacaville and Napa, California.I also have an Salsman aunt in West Covina; one in Arizona and an uncle in San Diego, CA.I have a brief history that was written by my great-uncle, Fred Evans Salsman. It is as follows:
"Here's what I know of our family tree.By word of mouth passed to me by my Father, George Washington Salsman, born in the mid-west on February 13, 1967 (Missouri). He had 2 brothers, Samuel Walker Salsman & Alexander Campbell Salsman and three sisters, Mary Olive Salsman(Hargrove), Maude Mae Salsman(Key) and Ida Lou Salsman(Turnham). The father of the above was Jessie D.(I think Davis) Salsman and Rachel Barnet Robinson (Salsman) the mother. The Salsman Clan has a Coat of Arms recorded int he Rietstap Armorial General. The original spelling is Saltzman. Now bear in mind this is by word of mouth passed to me by my Father. In the late 1700's, two brothers, one a Doctor and the other a Shoemaker came to America. They prospered. The Shoemaker confided in his brother the Doctor that it would be a nice gesture on their part to Americanize their name and suggested droping the "tz" and substituting an "s".At that time they were living in the neighborhood of what is now Pennsylvania. The Doctor listened, but decided to retain the name as was, Saltzman. The Shoemaker did drop the tz and substituted an s, Salsman. The two brothers went their separate ways and the Salsman moved westerly, and settled some time latter in the part of the country now known as Missouri region, probably a generation later. Now as the entire group of settlers kept moving in a Westerly direction, so did a Saltzman. In about the 1840's, a Saltzman was in a bar in the mid-west one day and got into a fight with another man.In those days men fought, and this fight ended with the Saltzman killing his opponent.During the night he reflected over the events passed, got up and alone headed for the Oregon Territory. He kept thinking about the conflict and as a matter of preserving his health beyone vacating the area he froped the "t" Salzman.Hence the above three ways of spelling our name and the descendants now living can if they were able trace their ancestry to one of the two brothers first mentioned above."
