As stated elsewhere in this series of postings, I sent extensive Emails to David which summarize the family of Luella Frank Salyards. Much of the information on this family comes from other Salyards who descend from this family. The following is a brief summary of these Emails:
Luella was the daughter of William Henry Harrison Salyards and his second wife Ann Elizabeth White. William was born in Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA, the son of Edward Sal(l)yards and his second wife Phoebe Gibson. William had a younger brother by the name of Edward J. who eventually went on to Indiana.
William's first wife was Ann Brown who was the mother of Willliam E., Benjamin Franklin and Richard Gibson Salyards. Benjamin Franklin died in the Civil War and is buried in a national cemetery in Virginia.
William's second wife was the mother of Mary J., Albert J., Emma, Harry Henry, India, Luella Frank, Elmer and Charles P. Salyards.
It is interesting to follow this family in the various federal censuses. In the 1820, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH, Edward appears as Selliard. In the 1840 West Union Twp, Adams Co., OH, the family is listed as William H. Salyards. In the 1850, Portsmouth, Scioto Co., OH, the family appears as William H.H. Salyards. In the 1860, Georgetown, Pleasant Twp., Brown Co., OH, it appears as William H. Salyards. In the 1870 Ironton, Lawrence Co., OH, the family is listed as William Sallard. Luella is now four years old and is listed as "Frankie." Finally, in the 1880, Ironton, Lawrence Co., OH, the family appears as William SALENDS. It was a challenge to find this one. Now Luella is listed as Luella F., age 14 and "at school." In all of these, William is listed as a printer as are some of the boys. The descendants of this family call him a publisher. William's son Richard Gibson Salyards went on to Missouri where he published newspapers.
Thus, you have a brief account of this family for anyone interested.
