Samsel's in Kusel 1580-1739
I am working on a book on the ancestors of those who arrived in Philadelphia August 1739 on the Ship Samuel. Among those identified was Paul Samsel, who married Anna Catharina daughter of Hans Daniel Born (not Borm)of Rathsweiler and his wife Anna Eva nee Schwab. Hans Daniel is a grandson of my Hans Born ca. 1615 and his wife Anna Elisabeth b. 1620 and daughter of Jacob Dromm.
I noticed a problem with the information posted concerning the father of Stephen Samsel, and oldest known member of the family in the Kusel area of Pfaltz Zweibrücken, Germany. The information, which I understand came from the book on the Samsel's, states that Stephen was the son of Weiland Sambsel. However, Weiland means deceased. I have a copy of the record in front of me, and what it actually says is as follows:
“January (looks like the 14th, but the ink was runny and the number is obscured) 1631 Stephen Sambsel surviving son of deceased (or Weiland in German) Simon Sambsel of Wiselbach married Margaretha daughter of Johannes Morgenstern of Schellweiler in the Parish Church (in Cußel).“
Therefore the father of Stephen is Simon who had died before January 1631 in Wiselbach. Stephen then settled in Schellweiler in Kusel Parish. Simon was father of Stephen, father of Arnold, father of Hans Conrad who was father of Johann Paul who arrived in Philadelphia 1739 with a wife and two children. I hope this is of use to you. Can anyone help with information on the death and burial of Conrad Samsel b. 1672 and died after 1744? Death records on the film I have end in 1744 and I was hoping not to have to order the next film just for that date.
Sincerely Michael Robinson
