Johann Samuel 1787 Canada

My ancestor Johann Samuel, son of Johann Samuel and Catherine Bertiau (or Bertran or Bertran), married in 1787 in Percé (Québec) Canada. I have no idea where he came from except that his name (Johann) sounds German or what was part of Germany at that time. He could have been part of a german regiment that fought in the Independence War in the USA and take refuge in Canada but I could not find any record of him as a Loyalist. When he was married by the priest, he was married outside of the Church on the steps leading to the Church and before the mass took place. Is that a sign that he was not a Roman Catholic or is it because his bride was considered a former Catholic. His bride's father Martin Dinhargue was indeed a former Catholic (Reformed Church of France) according to a passport he signed in 1753 in Bordeaux before embarking for the second time (at least) to Canada for a business trip (so it says in his passport)...Would anyone have infos. I have lots of descendants to share. Thanks......
