I recently found an important "missing link" in the family line of the Rev, Joseph Samuels (1763-1846) of Page County, VA. His father was Shadrach Samuels (c. 1730-1784) of Philadelphia Co., PA, later of Loudoun Co, VA. His mother was Martha Ann Dehaven, dau. of Abraham Dehaven (c. 1711-1771) of Philadelphia Co., PA, and later of Loudoun Co., VA, and wife Rebecca Pawling (c. 1716-Aft. 1771). Shadrach and Martha Ann were most likely married in Philadelphia Co., PA, and the marriage took place Before Feb. of 1761. The supporting documentation exists in Letter #205 written by the Rev. Heinrich Melchior Muhlenberg, source "The Correspondence of Heinrich Melchior Muhlenberg", vol. 4, 1757-1762, Picton Press 2010, pp. 206-209. In his letter, Rev, Muhlenberg in speaking of "Abraham Dehaven, says, "... Abraham's son in law, Shadrach Samuels"... In Abraham Dehaven's 1771 will, his two oldest daughters, Hannah and [Martha] Ann are mentioned as having been "already provided for", meaning they were married. There is no known record of the marriage of Martha Ann Dehaven, but her sister Hannah is known to have married Dirck Pennypacker. By default, therefore, to be Abraham Dehaven's son in law in 1761 means that Shadrach Samuels had to have been married to Martha Ann Dehaven. Notify Administrator about this message?
