Hi Gordon,
I have dated my Samwells to the late 1700s with William, birth place and date unknown, he married Mary Jones in 1813 in Wakefield. They were circus proprieters who had many children who also went into the circus business, and so too their children up to the early 1900s (and perhaps beyond?) in UK and USA.My problem is that due to their itinerancy I cannot link the first William in with other Samwells, although I am inclined to think he came from the Bedfordshire families merely due to the close proximity to London - the first circus and riding schools appeared in London around 1770 and I have a reference that my Samwells were in the business during the 18th century.
I have a large collection of Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Cornwall Samwell families - when you say Sir Richard Samwell, do you mean the husband of Frances Wenman? If so, I have a family tree of his descendants (to mid 1700s) and ascendants.
We could share info via e-mail - my address is [email protected] am in contact with several other Samwell researchers and I could put you in touch with them.
Thanks for your contact.
