In my records I have a John Sanders, Jr. born 1797 in North Carolina who married a "Mary" no surname. He died in 1841 but I don't know where yet. His father was John, Sr. who married Susannah Wheeler. I believe these are the same as yours, however, most of my info is off the internet on this. No census data or other hard evidence.

If John Jr. died in 1841 it would explain being missing from Magdalene's records. John Jr. son was Stephen S. Sanders.
