I think all of us Sandlin's & Sandilands would like to see some proof. This particular generation is where we Sandlin's seem to have a "missing link" directly connecting us to the Sandilands. I don't think that the linkwill ever be found because I don't think any specific documentation exist to prove or disprove this mystery. The oldest and only documentation I know of on James Sanderling is from The Virginia Patent Book, Number 7, Page 251. It says that he and his wife were transported from England to Virginia by a Mr.Edward Lassell to settle land in Gloucester County, Virginia on Dec. 22, 1682. I have also seen information on the internet stating that he was a merchant sailor that retired toChester County, Pennsylvania. I have not seen any proof of this account. Another interesting bit of information on the Sandlin name is that this spelling was being used in Norfolk County, England as early as 1607.
Personally I think that we Sandlin's are an Anglicized spelling of Sandilands but our origins are most likely not from William Sandilands of Hilderstown but probably at least 150-200 years before his time. We will probably never know for sure.
