Lineage of Lindsey (Lindsay) Sandridge

Hello,
I am attempting to verify the lineage of Lindsey Sandridge (b. 1807 approx, Ablemarle County, VA). I am descended from Lindsey Sandridge (my mother's 2nd great grandfather on her father's side) and Joel Maupin Sandridge (my mother's 2nd great grandfather on her mother's side). Apparently, Joel and Lindsey were either brothers or cousins. I have found 2nd hand evidence to support both cases. Lindsey is either the son of Dillard or Rueben Sandridge (brothers). Joel is the son of Dillard Sandridge (b. 1777, d. 1850). According to the 1840 Federal Census Record, Joel and Lindsey more than likely either lived next door to each other or on the same farm as their census records are consecutive. Any information would be greatly appreciated. If you can cite any references, that would be helpful, as there seems to be some contradicting conclusions regarding the lineage of Lindsey Sandridge.
Thanks in advance,
Dave
