51. Benedict Joseph Sanner, b. March 20, 1833, St. Mary's co., Maryland.m. c1856,in (Mound City?) IllinoisVirginia Dorcas Terry, b. at Wheeling, West Virgina, in December of 1837.Benedict and his wife lived in Baltimore with his sister, Mary Olivia “Leave” Sanner, at the home ofAnn Wise, daughter of Johnathan Bohanan, and was in the 1850 Census.In 1856 Ben received compensation from City of Baltimore for collecting water payments. At the outbreak of the civil war Ben and two of his brothers, Jonathan & John, decided to leave Maryland.They traveled west to Mound city, Illinois, and then to Ralls co., Missouri and finally settling at Hannibal, Marion co., Missouri.John decided to go back to Springfield, Illinois and the rest stayed in Hannibal, Marion co., Missouri.
In 1866 Virginia is recorded as a school teacher in Hannibal.She attended Monticello Seminary at Godfred, Illinois and received her certificate to teach which was issued by the Commissioner of Public Schools of St. Louis county.The school was a small private one held in a room of their log home in Hannibal.The post office is located there now (c1950) and has been for many years at the corner of Sixth & Broadway.
Ben was a fairly small man, very kindly and quiet.He had lost the sight of one eye.In 1866 he was listed in Hannibal, Missouri City Directory as a machinist at the Hannibal & St. Joe Railroad Shops.He was a farmer until he died August 11, 1920, at age 87, in Hannibal, Marion co., Missouri.Burial wasa in the Mt. Olive cemetery, Hannibal, Missouri.
