Hi, Alexius Sansbury had two daughters, Maria and Elizabeth that became charter members of the first Dominican Sisters in America.Maria (Sister Angela) became the Mother Superior, Elizabeth became Sister Benven.Alexius had a brother Nicholas and his two daughters Mary (Sister Catherine) and Rose (Sister Rose) also joined.
This all took place in Kentucky in 1822.They had an old one room log cabin that was donated to them as a start and the Sisters went to work. In 1829 the Sisterhood almost disbanded as they had a lot of debt and they had a new Spanish overseer, Father Munoz, that wasn't accustomed to Sisters that worked in the fields and wanted to teach a secular education. But the Sisters prevailed and eventually moved to Ohio where they established St. Mary of the Springs and later the Ohio Dominican College in Columbus.I visited the college earlier this summer and was treated like royalty as a relative of their beloved foundress Sister Angela. Its a very picturesque campus (I especially liked Sansbury Hall).
Hope this brief story answered your questions, for more info contact the college they can provide you with the entire history.
