Hi to every body,
My name is Asier Santillán and I am born in the Basque Country in Spain. My father is originally from a small village called Mahamud in Burgos (Spain), just 20 km far from the village called Santillán in the same Castillian province. It seems that my family lives in the area since the XVth century, more or less when America was discovered by Christophorus Columbus. There is another village called Santillán in Cantabria in the seaside closed to San Vicente de la Barquera. In the same Autonomous Comunity there are other villages called Santillana, Santullán or Santidrián. There are other places called Santillán in Sapin such as Santillán in Palencia or Huetor-Santillán in Granada, but due to the fact that these areas are southern than the one in Cantabria, and knowing about the Spanish history and the fight of the Christian Spaniards against the Islam during the Middle Age, together with the toponimic reallity of Cantabria we can think that our surname is originally from that area in the Atlantic coast. Santillán is an old latin name who can be divided in two different words Sant (Saint) and Illan (may be Julian). Santillana which is not a Mexican surname, for example could be Saint Juliana. Concerning the question about the blue eyes and the blondy grandparents, I can say that the north of Spain from where our surname is comming from, was originally populated by Basque tribes, a non-indoeuropean tribes living in the area may be since 6.000 years ago (today the Basque language is still alive and there studies saying that the language is originally a neolitic language), ethnically tall, strong, blondy and with blue or green eyes. And apart from the Basques the area was populated before the Romans, few thousands years ago, by the Celtics, the same people like in Ireland, Scotland or Galicia. So, the blue eyes are very habitual in our familly. My father, my sister and my grandfather had blue eyes.
I hope that with this explanations you know something else about our big and old family.
Best regards,

Asier Santillán Luzuriaga
