Helen,
This is in response to your question about Matthew P. Lyons.
Born @ 1821 in Ireland.....
Arrived in U.S. @ 1841......
Married Eliza Alderman in 1845 in Irwin Ga.......
Employed as school teacher in Thomas Co. Ga......
Moved to Fl in early 1850's with In-Laws......
Lived in Fort Green Fl 1856 and wrote some interesting letters to the commander at Fort Brooke about Indian conflicts (Can be found on google.com under Matthew P.Lyons).......
Matthew and one of his brother in laws were Union sympathizers and therefore were not well accepted or liked.Matthew was a prisoner of war even though he was not in the service.....
Matthew was active in politics and in 1867, was a member of Hillsborough County (Tampa, Fl) Voter Registration board......
In 1869 he became postmaster and also helped bring the railroad to Tampa.......
1870 - Clerk of Circuit Court....
1873 - Took over tax assessors job......
Matthew and family dissapear from records......
1900 -Matthew reappears in 1900, by himself, in the 1900 census of Chokoloskee, Fl as a boarder with the Santini family......
According to the book "The Story of Chokoloskee Bay County by Tebeau", he was a school teacher and that is the last we hear of him.....
His wife, my great great grandmother, Eliza Alderman, died in 1914 in Tampa, Fl.There is much info (and a book) to be found on the Alderman family. They were well known in the cattle bussiness and a park in Hillsborough County (Alderman's Ford Park) is named after her father.
Thank you for the info you supplied and I hope the above will be of some help.If you happen to find or have any more info on Matthew P. Lyons (especially the missing years or where or when he died) it would be greatly appreciated.
