In Reply to: Sapienza, Sebastian 1885 Sicily by Charles T. Sapienza of 98

Sebastiano Sapienza of Lawrence, MA was born in 1885 in Zafferana, Sicily on the eastern slopes of Mt.Etna. His father Rosario Sapienza 1855-1933 managed an estate for a family of wealthy landowners. His grandfather Salvatore who lived to be 95, and his great-grandfather Giuseppe both came from the same region. As young men in the early 1900's, Sebastiano and his older brother Salvatore both emigrated to Lawrence MA and married sisters who had come over from the neighboring village of Trecastagni. A younger brother Giuseppe later came and joined them. Sebastiano returned to Italy in 1913, served on the local police force (guardia di campagna?) and was wounded serving in the Italian army in WWI (the Italian govt later gave him a decoration for his service). In 1922 he re-emigrated for good to Lawrence, MA with his wife and 4 children, as he refused to kow-tow to Mussolini's fascists who were just coming to power. His brother Salvatore meanwhile had returned permanently to Italy although his younger brother Giuseppe remained in Lawrence and had six children of his own.
