Three disticnt Satterlee-ly lines settled in UPstate, New York
Research into Satterlee-ly family history and genealogy is complicated by the fact that all three of the original Satterlee-ly lines had descendants that moved into the Upstate New York area between about 1725 to 1800. Satterlee-ly men from the Nicholas Satterlee of R.I. line, the Benedict Satterlee of Connecticut line, and the William SatterLY line of Long Island, N.Y. were all migrating "west" from the coastlines into the wilderness areas of Upstate, N.Y.
Unfortunately, record keeping in this era was relatively sparse, which makes research even more difficult.
Finally, even more CONfusion occurs because family names were changing. SatterLEE names became SatterLY and vice versa.
In some areas of Upstate, NY, there were folks from the three Satterlee-ly lines living in quite close proximity to each other.
Little by little, we are slowly sorting out who was who in Upstate, New York circa 1725-1800
and I think very accurate family trees will soon be the result.
Take GREAT CARE in recording your family data.
Keep accurate notes and be prepared to provide SOURCES and CITATIONS for ANY inforamtion that you post on any public trees. Otherwise, any INaccurate information will be endlessly copied and transmitted on the net.
Good luck!!
