Marcia:
I too believe my GGGrandmother had the name of Elizabeth SAHM, who along with her husband ADAM emmigrated from Germany around 1835 to Franklin Co. IN; one of their children was named Elizabeth, and her brother, my GGrandfather, Martin (1850 census had no listing of any mother), lived on a farm near Brookville.Orphaned at age 17, he moved to Wayne Township in Butler Co. OH to work on a farm belonging to James M. STOKES (surname in 1860 Census was SAM).Maybe there's a connection!Married Mary Eleeanor THOMAS in 1865 (surname on certificate was SAWN!), after serving in Civil War (sometimes surname written on roster as SOAM!).But always signed his name SAUM, and in 1884 moved to Macon/Dewitt Counties in IL to work on a farm, moving in 1892 to Clay County NE.
Anything sound familiar?
