Can anyone help with my SAUNDERS
The Saunders I have are Catherine SAUNDERS(b circa 1812 somewhere in the vicinity of New Castle Upon Tyne, England, parents unknown) wife of Ephraim RYLES. Catherine and Ephraim arrived in South Australia in 1849 on the Eliza from Newcastle, England. Then there is Richard SAUNDERS and wife Rebecca JONES who arrived in South Australia also in 1849, on the Calphurnia, from where I do not know at this stage, the story is that they were from Cornwall. I recently discovered that Richard and Rebecca had 4 children with them when they arrived. I have since found out that one was called Robert, he married a Mary Ann Hall. It is possible that another one was called Richard, this hasn’t been verified yet, but that still leaves two unaccounted for. Richard and Rebecca had two more children after their arrival in South Australia, Matthew SAUNDERS born 1849 and Emma born 1852. Matthew married Amy Jane RYLES, 9th daughter of Ephraim and Catherine. Emma married Benjamin BARREY. Matthew SAUNDERS and Amy Jane RYLES had 5 children before moving to Victoria where 4 more children were born. Their daughter Amy Jane SAUNDERS married William EAST(my grandparents). Matthew and Amy also had a daughter Rose Rebecca SAUNDERS who married George Albert SAUNDERS. I recently received a document that tells me that George Albert SAUNDERS was born in Melbourne, his parents were William Saunders and, although it is a little faded it looks like Williams wife’s name was Mary JONES(so there I have the JONES name popping up again), where they originated from I do not know. It seems that quite a few of the SAUNDERS and RYLES moved from South Australia to Victoria. But I have been told that there are relatives in other states as well. I did hear that one of my grandmother's older brothers Frederick SAUNDERS moved to Western Australia (in the late 1800’s I think)and married and had a family there. The SAUNDERS were never much for keeping in touch etc.
As well as all that there is a mystery Margaret SAUNDERS who arrived in 1879 on the Holmsdale. She connected with my SAUNDERS and RYLES in Victoria on her arrival. Margaret was listed as a domestic servant on the passenger list. I have since discovered that also on the Holmsdale with Margaret were Ann SAUNDERS. Bridget SAUNDERS, Domestic Servant. Thomas SAUNDERS, Agricultural Labourer. And John SAUNDERS, Agricultural Labourer. I don’t know as yet if these are all connected or where they finished up.
