My family changed its name from Saunders to Sanders between 1828 and 1832 by Samuel Saunders III.His grandfather came to this country with his brother Joseph Saunders between 1710-1725.Our families oral history states they came from Scotland.Generally speaking those Scots with the surname of Saunders are members of Clan McAlister. I believe that I read that the McAlister lands were in Kintyre around Tarbert.I might be mistaken, I am working off of my memory :-)At one time they were part of the MacDonald Clan or Clan Donald, they were given permission to break away with the McAlisters and form that clan.Though I don't know exactly which kings, I have heard at least three kings of Scotland bore the Saunders name.Just for the record, no self respecting Scot would pronounce his last name as SAWN-durz, but rather SEWN-durz, as the AU sounds as a long "O". The SAWN-durs is reserved for the English pronunciation of Sanders which my family says with a short "A" as in apple.
