The 1840 U.S. Census contains a section for the names of persons who were receiving pensions for Revolutionary Service or Military Service. Listed is David Saunders, Sr., age 84 years. On Heritage Quest is a copy of the pension file for David. Many public libraries provide this database online for the use of their patrons, so inquire at the Reference Department of your library about the availability of this service. Included in the file is the record of the marriage of David, certified by the Clerk of the Court of Bedford County, Va., stating David Saunders married Locky Leftwich on September 4, 1788. David stated he was born in Hanover County, Virginia, in 1760 (therefore the age of 84 years given for him in the 1840 census would be incorrect; he would actually have been 80 years of age.) David stated that after the Revolutionary War he lived in Amherst County, VA, until 1784 at which time he moved to Bedford County. This is a very interesting file to read. David fought at Valley Forge among other locations, and he entered service in the Virginia line in 1778. Notify Administrator about this message?
